Introduction

City Planning NZ is an independent, online site covering local and global urban news, issues and innovations. Examining regional, national and international urbanism, we aim to provide a balanced and holistic look into the global urban experience. Written by undergraduate Urban Planning students, City Planning NZ aims to inform and foster debate about urbanism and urban issues through a safe and educational online forum.

As 68% of the world’s population will live in urban areas by 2050 (United Nations 2018), we believe that public participation is paramount in creating an equitable urban future for all. Healthy, safe and liveable built environments require collaboration between stakeholders to ensure that past planning mistakes are not repeated. Cities are now expanding at an unprecedented pace – by 2030 there will be 43 megacities with metropolitan areas exceeding 10 million plus inhabitants (United Nations 2018). In New Zealand, 73% of the population live in urban centres of 30,000 or more with approximately one-third living in Auckland alone (Statistics New Zealand, 2006). Urbanisation, globalisation, climate change and population growth present new challenges for planners and citizens in creating sustainable urban communities. We believe that free, unbiased and neutral journalism is key in enabling urbanites to become informed and active global citizens. Through features, essays, and articles we aim to encourage online discourse, providing an opportunity for both planners and citizens to become actively involved in the global urban conversation.
